Hilda's Place is the homeless shelter for single men and women in Evanston. It's managed by Connections for the Homeless. It provides overnight shelter to 34 adults and is open 365 days a year. It also provides meals and assists supports the homeless' transition to independence.
One year we went there during Winter Break, and helped them sort donated clothes and food. Then we baked blueberry muffins at home and served them on New Year's Day. Normally breakfast is seved from 5:15 - 7 am because by law they are supposed to be out of the overnight shelter by 7 am. On New Year's Day they have a late breakfast at 7 am, which is nice for us volunteers who want to sleep in a bit.
