"Trendsetter" interview in Tech Trends

Educational Innovation & Technology

Researching educational technologies and innovations for 18 years

In 1995, while attending a meeting hosted at the National Science Foundation, I learned that my design skills were valuable, but there was greater demand for someone who could conceive of and carry out research and evaluations.

It has been my pleasure to work with innovative educators, school leaders, technology developers and reform organizations. I have conducted national, state- and district-level studies, and conducted formative evaluation for dozens of products and services. I am gratified that my work has informed teaching and learning across the US and globally.

Throughout my carer, the fundamentals of design, measurement, analysis, and reporting have held up surprisingly well.  Still, new technologies create new challenges and opportunities to innovate, test claims, manage data, and produce knowledge.

I view statistics as tools for improving knowledge and building on the qualitative understandings we need in our research.  Including mixed-methods can help us ask better questions, develop useful measures and draw more meaningful conclusions.

My interests include the role of technology in supporting education reform including new forms of learning and assessments, and use of shared rubrics to promote critical thinking and evaluation.
