The Jewish Synagogue, Museum and School

27th April 2010

by Joe Lewis

On Tuesday the 27th of April the winner and runner up of Estonia’s National Finals were met by the British ambassador in Tallinn’s Jewish community center.  Here, as well as getting a tour of the center’s Estonian-Jewish museum and the city’s ultra modern synagogue, their speeches were listened to by the ambassador and he presented them with their National Final Cups.

The afternoon’s proceedings began with a brief tour of the countries only Synagogue, opened in May  2007, the building has become a symbol of the resilience of Jewish culture in Estonia after the second world war, when so many of Estonia’s Jews were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust and occupation.

We then moved on to a tour of the Jewish community’s school and a further brief tour of the Jewish Estonian museum, which highlighted not only Jewish history in Estonia, but which also looked at contemporary Jewish culture and famous Estonian Jews in sports and the media.

The speeches of the winners were delivered in the hall of the Jewish community’s school, to students from a local English language club, a few ESU representatives and to the ambassador himself. All listened closely as first place Mariell Vain and third place Grigory Gavrilov (second place Martin Kilp not being able to attend) gave their speeches with all the fluency and confidence of a native speaker. Ambassador Peater Carter was so impressed by the young speakers that he offerd what ever help he could to Mariell Vain in her preparation for the London Finals.

Again we wish Mariell Vain all the luck in the world as she goes on to represent estonia in London.

The launch in Estonia of Michael Wynne-Parker's latest book “We Shall Fly”

Tuesday 27th October at 6.00 pm

We are pleased to inform you that our next event will be a literary one, the launch in Estonia of Michael Wynne-Parker's latest book "We Shall Fly", which was launched in London last week and which is already selling well on Amazon. In the author's words:

"This new book tells the story of the remarkable life of Tony Wadlow, a pioneer of British commercial aviation, who was born in relative poverty and, overcoming all obstacles, achieved great things. Wadlow was a man who did not understand the word "no": for him everything for him was possible, and he made things happen."

The author, Michael Wynne-Parker will speak to members about the book and the remarkable man behind the story and will sign copies, which will be available for purchase at EEK 170 (all profits to go to ESU Estonia).

This event, which is free for members, will take place from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm on Tuesday 27th October at Roosikrantsi 4d. Light refreshments will be served, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this, the first event of our new season.
