What is an Engraving?

An engraving is the artistic process of etching a design onto a usually flat surface by cutting grooves into the designated medium. When the design was finished, which was usually a long process, it could be used like a stamp pad. It was dipped in ink and placed onto paper. The resulting images would be called engravings. Below are examples of some of Durer's most famous engravings.
