Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Wednesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time I: The First Must Be Last

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Sirach 36:5-6, 10-17
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 79:8, 9, 11, 13
Gospel: Mark 10:32-45

‘Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many (NRSV, Mark 10:43b-45).’

Let us pray.

Father, your Son Jesus teaches us the true meaning of glory and honor.  It is not in seeking the first place but rather in the service of one another. Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life for us.  May we who accept you gift of divine life into our own learn that to be true to your gift that we give of ourselves in the service of our sisters and brothers.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
