Giovanni Lanfranco, Moses and the Messengers from Caanan, Getty Museum, 1621-24

Wednesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time:    Not the Land but the Kingdom of God

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Numbers 13:1-2, 25--14:1, 26-29, 34-35
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 106:6-7, 13-14, 21-22, 23
Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites; from each of their ancestral tribes you shall send a man, every one a leader among them (NRSV, Numbers 13:1-2).’

Let us pray.

Father, when at Mt. Sinai we heard you speaking to us, we realized the you were God for us and that you called us into the future but the only future we could conceive was a future in the Land.  Little did we realize then, what has become so clear for us in our Lord Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, that you were not calling us to the Land but to everlasting life with you in your kingdom.

Father may we say “yes” to you in every moment and grow constantly in your life that you share with us even now in preparation for life with you forever in the world to come.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
