Tuesday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time I:     Who Wants to be First Must be Last of All

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Sirach 2:1-11
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

“Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all (NRSV, Mk 9:35b).”

Let us pray.

Father, when Jesus would teach us who the model is for those who would be his disciples, he turns to a little child, not because of childhood innocence as one might think, but because the child is the one who is most dependent, the child is the one who receives.

Father, may we finally come to realize that there is nothing that we can do on our own, that all is gift, freely given by you, to be received by us.

If all is gift, Father, we cannot make any claim of importance on our own.  All we can do, in turn, having received from you, is to give to others, to our sisters and brothers.

May we learn from you, Father, through your Word in the Holy Spirit, that we fulfill ourselves, not in claiming honor and glory, but in giving to others as you have given to us.

May we learn then to be servant, as Jesus is servant.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
