Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Peter Comestor, God and Moses, Historia Scholastica, St. John's College, Oxford, 13th-14th cent.

Tuesday of the Eighteenth week in Ordinary Time:          Direct Access to God

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Numbers 12:1-13
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 6-7, 12-13
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36

And the Lord said, ‘Hear my words:
When there are prophets among you,
   I the Lord make myself known to them in visions;
   I speak to them in dreams.
Not so with my servant Moses;
   he is entrusted with all my house.
With him I speak face to face—clearly, not in riddles;
   and he beholds the form of the Lord
(NRSV, Numbers 12:5-8).

Let us pray.

Father, when first we realized that you speak to us, we thought that it had to be through intermediaries, angels, even Moses, or through dreams and visions, but in the Lord Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, we have come to understand that you speak directly to each one of us, once and for all, in every moment.  In your same Word we all have direct access to you without intermediary.  May we be every responsive to your Word always present to us.  May we grow constantly in our understanding and in our acceptance of your life offered to all.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
