At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to the vow he had made (NRSV, Judges 11:39a).

Let us pray.

Father,  Your Word speaks to us at every moment even from that first moment in the womb.  How difficult because of our creatureliness, our historical situation, and our common and personal sinfulness to understand the one Word that is spoken.  Jephthah slew his own daughter through well-intended error.  Often we misunderstand, even in the Church, to the great harm of many of our sisters and brothers.  May we be ever attentive to what we hear and most careful before we act.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
