Thursday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time I:      The Challenge to Leave Sin Behind

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Joshua 3:7-10, 11, 13-17
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 114:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
Gospel: Matthew 18:21--19:1

While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan (NRSV, Joshua 3:17).

Let us pray.

Father, as the Israelites passed through the sea leaving their physically enslaved lives behind, so they passed through the Jordan challenged to leave their sins behind in the desert.  In our baptism, indeed in every moment of our lives, you challenge us as well to leave our sins behind us.  Father, may we accept the foregiveness that you always offer to us and lead ever new and holier lives as you call us forward on pilgrimage through this life into the world to come.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
