Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time:            How Little We Understand

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Ex 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b
Responsorial Psalm: Daniel 3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56
Gospel: Mt 13:10-17

‘The reason I speak to them in parables is that “seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand (NRSV, Matthew 13:13).”’

Let us pray.

Father, you speak your one Word to us at the depth of our being at every moment.  The same one Word has even become flesh in one of us, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Because we are creatures limited by our historical situation, victims of our own sinfulness and influenced by the common sinfulness of our sisters and brothers, we find it difficult to understand your revelation.  May our minds be attentive to what you speak and our wills accepting of your forgiveness and the share in your own divine life that you offer us in every moment and in which you call us continually to grow, now and in the world to come.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
