A Pilgrim's Daily Prayer

Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Marc Chagall, Joshua and the Rock of Shechem, Franklin Bowles Galleries, New York, 1956

Saturday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time I:      Covenant Renewed in Every Moment

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Joshua 24:14-29
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 11
Gospel: Matthew 19:13-15

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord (NRSV, Joshua 24:25-26).

Let us pray.

Father, Joshua in his farewell address to the people at Shechem renewed the covenant with them.  Your Word, now made flesh in our Lord Jesus Christ, always present to us, challenges us to renew that covenant in the power of the Holy Spirit at every moment, calling us to die to what we have been up until then to be reborn to an every increasing share in divine life.  May we be ever faithful to the covenant of our fathers, Abraham, Moses and Joshua, and of the Lord Jesus himself, by living it out in every moment.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
