Saturday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time:            God Forgives Without Payment

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 50:1-2, 5-6, 14-15
Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30

Moses sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed oxen as offerings of well-being to the Lord (NRSV, Exodus 24:5).

Let us pray.

How often, Father, even when we have listened so carefully to your Word, have we thought it possible to find forgiveness from you or to gain favours from you by offering you gifts, sacrifices to win you over.

It is only is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, that we have begun to grasp that your forgiveness, indeed the gift of your own divine life is always freely given.  No payment is ever required.  The one true sacrifice is in reality the life of giving, receiving and sharing that you live as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  This life is made perfectly manifest for us in Jesus who lived it in every moment, never more fully than in his passion and death on the Cross.  We too join in this same sacrifice as we say “yes” to you in the moment and accept your life into our own.  May we grow in your grace and share ever more fully in the sacrifice of your inner life in every moment here on earth and in the world to come.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
