Monday 20th Ord I

A Pilgrim's Daily Prayer

Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Unknown Cinese Master, The Rich Young Man

Monday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary time I:             Choose First God and his Coming Kingdom

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Judges 2:11-19
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 106:34-35, 36-37, 39-40, 43, 44
Gospel: Matthew 19:16-22

Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me (NRSV, Matthew 19:21).’

Let us pray.

Father, the challenge that Jesus laid down to the rich young man was not really one about money at all.  Jesus was inviting him to make your coming kingdom the center and focus of his life and not to be distracted by other interests.  May we, Father, turn away from anything that might draw us away from you but to choose you first and then order everything else that we do under that choice.  May we thus truly become disciples of Jesus.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
