Monday of the 13th Week in Ordinary Time I: Let the Dead Bury the Dead
Readings for Mass
Another of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead (NRSV, Matthew 8:21-22).’
Let us pray.
Father, of course, Jesus wants me to bury my father, but everything must be done in good order. No one comes ahead of you, Lord. My first duty is to you, Father, and your coming kingdom. Having chosen you above all else, then it is clear that my immediate obligation, in living out the divine life that you share with me, is to pay my last respects to my earthly father.
Lord, may I never choose anyone or anything ahead of you but always fulfill all of my obligations and duty as your obedient son.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
