Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time:                 God Speaks the Word Once and for All in Every Moment

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 11
Gospel: Matthew 13:18-23

Then God spoke all these words (NRSV, Exodus 20:1):

Let us pray.

Father, you speak your Word once and for all to every human being at every moment.  Because of our creatureliness, our cultural background, our common and personal sinfulness, we find it difficult to understand.  In your prophet Moses and the Israelites at Mt. Sinai, there was a decisive moment of enlightenment.  For the first time, Father, we realized that we are your people and that you demand that we love one another. We expressed that call to morality in the Ten Commandments.  In every successive moment, Father, we have the opportunity to grow in our understanding of your one Word and to realize more fully the life to which you call us.  May we ever be responsive to your Word, now made flesh in our Lord Jesus Christ, and live out our lives in ways always more and more responsive to your perfect goodness.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
