Friday 13th Ord I

A Pilgrim's Daily Prayer

Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Thomas Woolner:  Feeding the Hungry, 1872

Friday of the Thirteenth week in Ordinary Time:                Mercy, Not Sacrifice

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Genesis 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67
Responsorial Psalm:
Psalms 106:1-2, 3-4, 4-5
Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13

Go and learn what this means, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice (NRSV, Matthew 9:13).”

Let us pray.

How often, Lord, we try, through supposed gifts, to win your favour or your forgiveness.  The one, true sacrifice, Lord, is your own inner life of giving, receiving and sharing in love.  It is not we who can give you gifts, Lord, but in every moment, in every situation, you offer us a share in your life.  May we accept that gift which always brings forgiveness and reconciliation and empowers us to go out to one another in love and service.  That is what you ask of us, Lord, to accept your life into our own, a life that inevitably manifests itself in acts of mercy.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen
