A Pilgrim's Daily Prayer

Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Johann Christoph Weigel, Paul Writing to  Philemon from Biblia ectypa: Bildnussen auss Heiliger Schrifft Alt und Neuen Testaments, 1695

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time:                               All Called to Serve

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14-17
Second Reading: Philemon 1:9-10, 12-17
Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment (NRSV, Philemon 1:10).

Let us pray.

Father, as Jesus realized that he had come not to be served but to serve, may all of us come to understand as well that, as sharers in your own divine life, we are called to be slaves to one another, going out to all of our sisters and brothers, not to dominate and to use, but always to be of service to one another.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen
