A Pilgrim's Daily Prayer

Called through the Word to the everlasting journey in the Spirit

from nothingness to union with the One who is the Beginning and the End

Maurice Denis: Martha and Mary, The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, 1896

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time:                                     Choose First the Kingdom of God

Readings for Mass
First Reading: Genesis 18:1-10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 15:2-3, 3-4, 5
Second Reading: Colossians 1:24-28
Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.  Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her (Luke 10:41-42).’

Let us pray,

Father, Jesus has taught us that only one reality is important, you and your coming kingdom.  May we not be distracted by this task or that, no matter how noble, but choose first your kingdom and then organized everything in our lives under that one choice.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
