"Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results." -Author unknown

As most of you know, I have also started a blog. After careful consideration, I decided that it would be worthwhile due to the fact that you can "slurp" a blog into Blurb- I believe that is the terminology. In other words, at the end of the year it can be printed in book form which sounds perfect, two birds really. I LOVE this website & intend to still use it, but probably not on a daily basis. There is so much content with links & pictures- I just can't let it go. But now you will have two locations to see our little family & our adventures. The blog address is:

It's hard to believe that it has already been a month since I have put any pictures or stories on our website. Part of the reason for the neglect is that we have been having a lot of fun with our friends and I've also been reading alot. Yes, I have gone from one book to another and that means my house hasn't been in complete order either. But mostly, I have been going to bed late- and the other addiction has been watching the Olympics! Whew, it's been fun to watch. I don't have any great stories other than it's hard to believe that Kate will be starting preschool again on September 2nd. And we are still working on that potty training! If you are wondering, we have been actively working on her being potty trained for a little over a year now. Yep... she's one stubborn little lady. Her good friend Maddi is having a birthday party next Saturday and she's having a 'Fancy Nancy' themed party, one of Kate's favorite books. So in preparation for that party, here are a few pictures of Kate getting her outfit together! Sofia got in on the action, too! They look spectacular (that is a fancy word for great). If you have a daughter and you haven't seen these books, they are fantastic! There's four books out and another due next month. We highly recommend them.

Today was brutally hot, plus humidity (heat index)= yuck! This morning was Kate's sports camp day- T-ball. Heather and I were in charge of running the camp. We had some fun & snacks. Sofia really wanted to get involved- it will be fun to watch Kate & Sofia's developing interests. If they want to dance, I am hosed. I can't help them there. But if they want to play sports (soccer I hope) I could help a little. Kate just loved running around the bases today and it reminded me of my softball days. Fond memories.

Kate was trying on my leg yesterday. It almost fits! (wink) I have fond memories of my little sisters trying my leg on when they were around the same age. Fun to see!

Occasionally I come across a photo that makes me realize how quickly our children change & grow. Kate & I went to the Discovery Place here in Charlotte. We hadn't been since the first summer we moved here (2 years ago). There is a picture of Kate sitting in the chair that floats up powered by a vacuum (I believe). Anyway, I had a picture we took of her in it then and I took one of her in the same chair 4 days ago. Amazing how her legs now hang off... just thought it would be fun for you all to see how Kate has changed in the time that we have lived here in Charlotte. It's hard to believe that we will be moving by next summer!

We just had a wonderful 4th of July weekend with some great friends, the Francoms! I didn't want the weekend or the trip to end. We went to Boone, NC and also Mt. Mitchell. It was gorgeous despite the daily rain. We rented a cabin, hiked to waterfalls & peaks, the kids loved playing with each other- us adults, too! It was perfect!

Last night I started working on Kate's name (like the one I did for Sofia). I finished it today and probably like it more than Kate will. But she was so cute when she saw it... she covered her mouth and exclaimed, "Mom, I just love it... thank you!" Oh those gratifying, happy moments I just want to bottle up and keep forever!
FYI-Some of you have visited our site without knowing that I have included multiple links with pictures & stories throughout this main page. I have enlarged the links as you scroll down to better identify them. Also, at the very bottom of this page are links for each member of our family. Cheers!
It's hard to believe that we are almost to July! Our house is excited to celebrate Independance day- and wore red white & blue to church today!
Kate has a new project- she has a lady bug that she is going to watch grow. It's a little bug that will have grass growing out of it's head! Hopefully we will be able to document it's progress. Pictured right is Kate with her lady bug on day 1. She is really excited! She loves having projects & crafts to do.
God bless America!
And here is a little shout out for all of our troops- making it a safe & wonderful country! We love this land & support our troops! May our service men & women and their families be blessed for the sacrifices they have made! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Are you watching the summer's best show 'So You Think You Can Dance' on Fox? If not, you missed an amazing night of dancing on Wednesday night. I highly recommend you start watching! It is so GREAT! I have too many favorites to mention- there are so many incredible dancers.
Another recommendation is a new game show called "Wipeout." Jonathan and I were laughing so hard, we were crying!
Anyway... I have just taken a moment to sit back and reflect on some of the awesome people in my life- I have some great friends here in Charlotte that have helped me during this crazy time called RESIDENCY! Click on this link to meet some of these great people:
For those of you that see a simularity between Kate & myself, compare these two photos. Jonathan and I agree that if you cover my hair it's Kate's face- no we did not clone her! She got my face & Jonathan's coloring. For those of you that don't know, I am pictured here with my brother Mat- and yes, I was a child of the late 70's. But look, fashions reappear because smocking is back in... as for that lacy collar, well I am not sure about that!
So on June 12th, we went on an over night camping trip to South Mountain State Park about an hour outside of Charlotte. We got to hike to a beautiful waterfall, met some nice people and camped. The following is an email I sent describing the night I experienced: I was literally TERRIFIED all night.

So I like to have projects amidst my daily routines... somthing to look forward to. Something to get my artistic juices flowing! Now I can't sew like many of my amazing friends here, but I like to work with paper, i.e. card making and scrapbooking. However, I am never really satisfied because it doesn't usually work out just the way I had hoped. But I have a project that I am in love with and have finished one and have one more to do. I have both of the girls names in vinyl lettering (Michelle, an amazing friend of which I just referred) has a vinyl lettering business (www.thelettercafe.com). I have the girls names but couldn't figure out what to do with them because once you place them on a wall or what have you, they cannot be removed. With us moving in a year, I didn't want to waste the cute names on the walls-- so after much deliberation, I decided to frame them and... well, I will let you see for yourself. I still have Kate's name to do. I will have to figure out how to make a snail and I will have to include a lady bug... Kate's favorite bug. But I was thrilled and very happy with how Sofia's turned out! Pictured right! That's all for now...
I chopped my hair!
We went to the beach, baby!

Thank you Devan & Janae for having us!
Where is the time going? It's hard to believe it is already June. We have been enjoying the nice evenings the past few weeks as we have been working on our yard/landscaping.
But this week is supposed to be brutally hot! And the humidity is here to stay. (Oh boy) Here are a couple of pictures of our girls on their bikes, enjoying bubbles and dressing up (who says it has to be Halloween to dress up?). It should be a big indication we are in for some serious heat when our AC is set at 75 degrees and it started at 8 AM! Let's head to the pool!
We got to go to Washington DC with Jonathan. He had a residency medical conference and we had a fabulous time! Click on the link below for stories & pictures.
Happy Memorial Day! Jonathan is actually home with us today!
We were able to work in our yard and enjoy the pool and a bbq with our good friends, the Vander Noots.

Kate had her final day of preschool today. She loved preschool and is going to be shocked when she doesn't have to go on Tuesday (we are just trying to explain this thing called summer break). We will miss her teacher and the aide, Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Mary. It is amazing to me how much Kate has grown since she started last September.
Ms. Jennifer is pictured here with Kate and the one of Kate & Sofia was before the "graduation" ceremoy today... it was supposed to be my first picture but my batteries died. Now I am a planner, I like to be prepared and think ahead...and I had my backup batteries with me. When I put them in the camera, to my disgust, they too were dead. So a few friends took some pictures for me. Pictured right: an angelic Kate, happy and she is making Sofia, well, unhappy! Very typical. What a great day!
I can't resist putting this adorable picture, crazy dirty, of Sofia up. Even when she's filthy, she's a living doll! We are so blessed!
May 18-22 2008
Sofia has taken her first independant steps!!! We have been working with her for awhile, but she hasn't been comfortable without assistance until now. Usually Jonathan and I try to sit a few feet apart and she will walk back & forth between us. While Jonathan is working, I compromise and prop her up against the wall.
Sunday, the 18th while at a friends house, she took her first walk without holding on! She got started while we were in Utah-- but now she's gaining confidence. I can't believe my baby is growing up! It's like they all said... cherish each moment because they grow up way too fast!
We went to Utah, yes again. This time Jonathan was able to accompany us. We returned after only 4 weeks because Megan, Jonathan's little sister, got married. See link below for pictures from the festivities!
When we arrived on May 3rd, it had been a crazy travel day with many travel glitches that made the day even harder than it had to be. Needless to say, it was exhausting. Something I had highly anticipated was a veggie salad from Cafe Rio. I know, I am so predictable- and a creature of habit. Jonathan went off to the Real game (playing Galaxy- for those of you that don't know, that is David Beckham's team- so this was a BIG GAME) with my dad, brother Morgan and sister Carson. My mom and I, Kate & Sofia, and Dustyn and her friend Amy went to Cafe Rio. We were on our way from Cafe Rio to drop Dustyn & her friend off at Lagoon when this VW sedan swerved and almost slammed into the passenger side of our car. My mom swerved to miss the side impact when we started fish tailing and ended up having a very serious car accident. We spun out of control and ended up past some construction barriers and slammed into a 10 foot cement barrier. We were headed southbound on I-15 and by the time we stopped, we were facing north. The highway patrol officer said that if we hadn't hit that barrier, we would have flipped. Amazingly, none of us were hurt. Both of my babies were crying and we were all very shaken. Glass had blown out of a window and we were at such an angle that we had to climb out of the vehicle with assistance. Ironically, the car (that ended up being declared "totaled") was a lease and was going to be turned in 5 days later. Oops. We feel that we had angels with us, it was very scary and a crazy way to end a very long travel day! I love you Mom! Thanks for your quick reflexes! I don't even want to think about what would have happened had that car slammed into us going freeway speeds.
Kate got her princess dress today and she is in heaven! Thank you so much for making it Shanda! You are amazing!
Tour de Georgia! We went with some great friends to watch some of the most talented professional bike riders in the world. We went last year and had to go again this year! Highlights this year included meeting George Hincape, Tyler Hamilton, and Dave Zabriski (forgive me if I have mispelled any of their names). We rented a cabin in Helen, Georgia with the Hayes and Vander Noot families. This year I stepped it up with an unusual request and asked both George & Dave to sign my prosthesis. Both admitted that it was a first for them. Dave was so funny, I kind of lost my balance and he was holding me up- fun memories- he was a little embarrassed by the whole situation. Gotta love his handlebar mustache. I suppose it doesn't weigh him down. At the top of a climb, Jonathan was at the top when Dave rode up, Jonathan yelled about being from SLC and was giving him verbal encouragement... Dave had one word for him... "push." That was the highlight for Jonathan, he got to run along side and gave him a little push! Fun times, click on the link below to see more pictures from our trip.
Today was Sofia's cherry themed birthday party. We had good friends come over & we had cake and ice cream! Our baby girl is one!

Thank Heaven for Little Girls!
We count ourselves so fortunate to have 2 healthy little girls that keep us laughing on a daily basis! They are growing & changing so much, it's amazing. Sofia just had her 1st birthday while we were in Utah. We had a joint party in Utah (my birthday is 2 days after hers) and we are having another party for her next Saturday. Cherry baby!
Perfect day! Today is beautiful! Sunny, warm... perfect. Too bad the heat & the humidity are on their way... otherwise I would never leave Charlotte. While Jonathan was mowing the lawn, he had two little helpers!
Jonathan is on a very busy rotation this month, so I am taking his suggestion to get out of dodge. Kate, Sofia and I are going to Utah for a nice little get away. They really need to see grandparents and aunts and uncles! Cafe Rio, here I come!!!
Sofia is our little explorer. I have to keep a close eye on her, she likes to find adventures! One of her favorite things to do is climb stairs. She is just such a joy and makes us laugh every day!
Congratulations John! He just found out today that he was accepted into his program and he and Jeanette will be moving to PA- closer to us. Hey, we will be in the same time zone!

Congratulations to the Vander Noot family, our good friends, they just welcomed their newest member of their family today- James Andrew! We are so happy for you! Kate got to go see her daddy working in the pediatric emergency room after we visited the Vander Noots and met Andrew.

Kate had her third birthday party today. If you would like to see some pictures from her party... click below:
So I have tried to update our website. My goal is to get to it more regularly. We have had a lot of runny noses this winter. But we are having a great time. Sofia has been crawling for a few weeks and obviously with new mobility, she is getting into everything. Kate now has to defend what ever it is she is doing because that is the first thing Sofia goes for. What can we say, she loves her big sister. As of right now, she has two teeth, on the bottom. She loves to crawl and stand up using just about anything for balance. Her personality is starting to evolve and she's a little bit of a diva. She knows what she wants and she wants it NOW. But she is still a sweetheart, too. Go to Sofia's link to see some new pictures. Kate is now 3, and she loves going to her preschool class and now is enrolled in a gymnastics class & it's perfectly suited for this high ball of energy. Kate also loves to swim and looks forward to swim lessons this spring.
I know, I know... I haven't done anything with our site for months. My apologies- I have lofty goals and less time to accomplish them(I can hear some of you saying- duh!). Life has been great for us. Jonathan is still alive despite his crazy residency schedule. We miss him. And we especially cherish the time that we do see him, which usually includes me needing his help with something around the house. He graciously helps and is so great with his two biggest fans, his little girls. Kate will be turning 3 this month... more to come on that. Sofia just turned 8 months old- and hitting all of her 'firsts.' For example, her first Halloween, Thanksgiving, and upcoming Christmas. Both girls are such a joy & a blessing. They keep us laughing and counting our lucky stars everyday!
We recently had a few days where we were able to go to Utah and see family and friends. It was a much needed get away and everyone was a site for sore eyes.

Our little Sofia Jane joined our family today! She's got a head full of dark hair and Kate refers to her as "my baby" and always wants to hold her.
Labor and delivery were all as good as one could hope for! It all went fast and very smoothly. Such a contrast from Kate's delivery. This time there wasn't any NICU stays- which we are grateful for!
Although he was already out numbered by just Kate and myself... now Jonathan is REALLY out numbered with Sofia- making us a family of 4!

Kate is holding a small frog we named "Fred."
Kate coloring Peter Pan & Tinkerbell. Right now she LOVES any version (animated or real people) of Peter Pan. She is so excited that Tinker Bell is getting her own movie. She can hardly wait... literally. Out this fall.
