Course Overview

Outline of E-portfolio MOOC

A MOOC is a completely open online learning experience that can be shared by many, without logins or payment. In this MOOC you determine what you want to explore, how you want to learn, how much interaction you need and how you want to be supported. You are also free to harvest resources and ideas from the MOOC to help others in their learning about e-portfolios.

We make some recommendations for essential readings in each 'Level' page along with some attached resources. We also provide links to further information for those who wish to dig a little deeper; these are gathered together at the foot of each page.

You can choose the E-portfolio environment in which you want to store, share, reflect and showcase your own digital portfolio (e-portfolio). There are several options available to you as a participant in this MOOC and you will find details of those in the E-portfolio Systems page.

Effective Practice with E-Portfolios (PDF) Supporting 21st Century Learning. JISC (44 pages)

During the course you will become immersed in the whole spectrum (/process) of selecting, synthesising, reviewing, recording, organising, planning, sharing, collaborating, conceptualising, constructing meaning and publishing your e-portfolios.

The main aim of the MOOC is to provide learning and networking opportunities,  for:

VET practitioners developing a professional e-portfolio to support their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs
(eg industry and professional currency)

Some participants may be interested in 'me and my portfolio', ie developing their own personal/professional portfolio. But others might also be mentors/supervisors/tutors/facilitators who are working with large cohorts of people to support and develop all kinds of learning through the medium of e-portfolios.

EpCoP MOOC will engage you in missions, quests(same or different) and challenges to make your learning experience more dynamic and personally rewarding. The entire MOOC is based upon a set of simple questions relating to e-portfolios: What, Why, Where, How, So What, Who and Then What? Each of these are presented as Topics (Levels) within which you will find Missions to accomplish and Quest activities to experience. Each question is presented as a topic which is a level with a mission (objective) to accomplish.
  • There are also a number of optional Challenges you may wish to explore for learning how to create some different assets (artefacts) for your e-portfolios. These all come with online tutorials, some live and some recorded.
  • You will find definitions of terms in the E-portfolio Glossary.
  • There are recordings of previous e-portfolio focussed webinars in the E-portfolio Webinar Gallery.
  • All the recommended reading and viewing resources for this MOOC are contained in the Resource Kit. You will find reference to some of these in the Quests and essential resources attached at the bottom of the page.
  • The MOOC SCOOP is our  newsletter which will be available for you each week in the MOOC SCOOP Library.

In each topic (level) you will explore a number of resources and activities to help you accomplish your objectives ( missions).

 Topics (Levels):

Level One: What?

Level Two: Why?

Level Three: Where?

Level Four: How?

Level Five: So What?

Level Six: Now What?

Level Seven: Then What?
 Objectives (Missions):

Establish your own understanding of e-portfolios

Determine the purpose of your e-portfolio

Decide where you will create your e-portfolio

Gather evidence of your learning for your e-portfolio

Determine how you will engage in reflective practice

Decide on who to share your e-portfolio with and refine your collections

Reflect on and evaluate your e-portfolio

How will this MOOC help you to accomplish your missions?

  • requirements of participation - the maintaining of a blog and building of an e-portfolio in a space of your own choice
  • expected outcomes - increased skills and knowledge about e-portfolios
  • timing and scheduling - pilot course to begin in August, schedule for an eight week period (August 1 - September 30)
  • registering - participants will need to complete an online registration form and agree to this commitment of time
  • navigating - instructions on the tools to be used and how to navigate within them e.g. Googlesite, Googlegroup, Ning network
  • real time tutorials - Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate Live) sessions to be held every week

Our advice is to complete all activities in each Quest before attempting the activities in the next Quest. However, you can decide where you want to start the MOOC depending on your prior skills and knowledge of e-portfolios.

You may complete the activities in the quest with a team as an action based project for your organisation or project, or you may complete them individually.

We have established an epcop MOOC Network for all participants to communicate during the MOOC and we have set up a discussion forum for each level (mission) for you to engage with.

You may post questions or comments in the forums setup for each level and facilitators and mentors will respond to you in a timely manner.

There are a number of recommended web 2.0 tools for creating artefacts to use in e-portfolio collections located in the Challenge Gallery.

We encourage you to explore and evaluate two NEW web 2.0 tools that you will use to create assets/artefacts for your e-portfolio.

Each week we will schedule a live webinar for you to meet other participants and to listen to guest speakers. These will be located at the Australia e-Series Elluminate Live room at dates and times to be announced. Event notifications will be published in the epcop mooc network space.

Support webinars will be provided by a team of Web 2.0 mentors at regular times during the MOOC especially for help with the Challenges in creating innovative artefacts for your e-portfolio.

From time to time we will also publish news of any upcoming E-portfolio webinars that you may wish to attend online.

Radio EpCoP

A series of podcasts will be made available for you in each mission - to hear the voices of learners, teachers and administrators involved in e-portfolios. The full set of podcasts will be available at Radio EpCoP a podcast repository setup for the purpose of this MOOC.

A series of newsletters will be published each week of the course - providing a short, sharp and engaging overview of what each Level (topic) will focus on. The full set of MOOC Scoops will be available at MOOC Scoop Library.

Learning Process

We recommend that you complete the E-portfolio Skills Survey form before you begin your missions, and again at the end of the MOOC.

  • Virtual classroom - a Ning network and a Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate Live) classroom
  • Challenges
  • Missions
  • Quests
  • Badges

As you register to join the MOOC you will be invited to join the Ning network site (Virtual Classroom) where you can meet other participants and discuss your progress. (Note: early bird registrations will need to be approved by the administrator.) We will invite you to join our weekly webinars held in the Australia e-Series room.

In this Learnspace, you will be presented with an early challenge of learning at least two new web 2.0 tools (Challenges) that could support the development of assets/artefacts for your e-portfolio. You can earn extra awards (Badges) for presenting evidence (in context) in your e-portfolio.

You will be encouraged to complete sets of activities (Quests) to move through the topics (Levels) and accomplish your objectives (Missions). Each quest may be undertaken individually or in groups. All participants will have opportunities to explore, discuss and share the journey and the outcomes of their quests both asynchronously and synchronously.

Leaders will provide guidance, share knowledge and moderate webinars throughout the course. Leaders will assist the learning process and drive the learning experience through frequent online news, regular reflections of progress and consistent online presence.

You will be enabled to determine your own learning pathway, create your own approach to e-portfolio design and development, and earn your own Open Badges of achievement. You will be able to learn collaboratively and cooperatively in small teams/groups or individually.
