Events/Schedule

Foot Orienteering information: (jump down to current schedule)

We hold events open to everyone in the Spring and Fall, and try to hold Ski-O or Snowshoe-O events in the Winter if the weather gods cooperate. Summer is too hot and humid and the woods are too thick. However, if club members want to organize an summer evening sprint or street O event or something similar, contact Janet Tryson for ideas.

Registration for Saturday EMPO events is from 10:00 am - noon and Sunday events is from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, unless otherwise noted.

Entry fees for standard EMPO events are as follows:

  • EMPO members: $5 with a $13 maximum per family (for those with an EMPO family membership)
  • non-members: $10 with a $25 maximum per family
  • large groups: $5/$10 (member/non-member) for the first two groups' maps and $5 for each additional map
  • first-timer or white (orienteering novice) course: $5 (both member and non-member)
  • Fall Scout-O event: $4 per map (one map required per Scout)

  • SI stick rental for timing ("stick"=timing chip; most courses use electronic timing--also called e-punching--from SportIdent): $2
[You can purchase your own stick, from one of several vendors listed here: Orienteering USA vendors page; or sometimes through from EMPO if any are still for sale.]
Maps (without a course) may be purchased for $5 per copy.

EMPO event
Street O > start at Sugarbush Park, Clifton Park, NY

Details: Try a Street Orienteering Sprint on July 20 with start in Sugarbush Park, the entrance near the intersection of Okemo Court and Pico Road. There will be several courses for regular (foot) orienteering, and even one, if you prefer, for bike O or roller-ski O. All courses are designed so you can finish in under an hour. We will use classic card punch to keep it simple with map, clue sheet, and punch card on the same sheet. The courses will use the suburban streets and neighborhood trails.

Navigational difficulty will be similar to what one would expect of ski orienteering.

The longest course will be about 4 k that will go into Hayes Park and wooded Stony Creek Trails.

For those who have never tried orienteering before there's a nominal entry fee of $3 which covers the cost of your souvenir map.

We'd love to hold more EMPO events, but need event directors!

Team up and split the work; try something new!

We're always looking for adventurous people to learn about event directing and course designing! Contact Phil or Frank if you would like to organize something  this spring or fall.

Thank you for attending our previous meets! Find results for all events here.

To train at any time, visit Grafton Lakes State Park and ask for a permanent-course map at the Park Office (Park Naturalist Liz Wagner is our contact).
