Design Challenge:  

How might we design an empathy training MOOC?

How might we design a live and interactive 12 lesson online empathy training?

  1. Meeting Process

  • Review the Empathy Circle guidelines

  • Silent listeners take notes of dialog. And jot down your own ideas

  • Set max time for speaking?

    • If so timekeeper is:

  • Create a report of the discussion.

    • How, end early group review

    • Or someone write it up

  • Time allotment for meeting: 2 hour


Proposal: Empathy Circle: What is an empathic way of being?

  • Sunday April 24, 9am pst

  • Have at least 4 participants.

  • Use empathic listening

  • two people dialog and others take notes.

  • Go for 2.5 hours

  • stop after 1 hour and clean up and organize the notes.

  • Create a paper.

I’m not sure on how to create the Empathy lessons as a team in an effective way.

I sense a feeling of anxious about it.

Just talking for 2 hours every 2 weeks will not get a lot done.

I would like some sense of action, but I’m not sure what that would be?

How do we create an empathic way of being with the lesson design team?


Feel tired. Felt enlivened being out in the sun and water.

Visit friend - didn’t think about work for 3 days.

This empathy design work is satisfying and blew off another business meeting.

 I like the process of this group.

The doing the design process with others is different, I usually do the design of a workshop on my own.

My experience with online working on empathy, doing empathic listening is important.

Moving from speaking to seeing when the need it

Want to come to a place of moving spontaneously from speaking regularly and to know when we need empathic listening.

You begin with reflecting back - then become attuned to knowing when mirroring is needed.

It’s an important starting point.

When I watch reflective listening, I get  frustrated or impatient with it.

Today would like to find  a structure. Get an agreement

  • Have a basic outline.

  • How many sessions?

  • Who are we teaching for

  • A basic outline


Rosa agrees that reflection can be used as needed, not necessarily all the time, wonders how she can best contribute among the several opportunities there are.

Is curious to see which of these parts develop momentum and wonders that some might be hard to develop.

Is wondering if this is a group where she can contribute, is intrigued by it but not sure if she has enough time to develop a MOOC.

In her own experience it’s important for people in groups to share their own prototypes/methods

Asking the question of “what might that look like?” when a goal is stated gives people permission to be creative and to tweak it.

Need for a process to draw out people’s input/Create a process for individual prototypes: creating a space that is safe for creativity so people don’t feel criticized but build on each other’s ideas

Meetings can get stuck when jumping to a “we” too soon, need for individual contributions can be heard and understood, may be faster than jumping to a “we”


  • How do bring the creativity, the feeling of energy to the the empathic process?

  • The quality of empathy can be the shared creativity when the blocks are removed.

  • How to create a structure that allows the creative to emerge in an empathic way.

  • Removing the self-imposed blocks to sharing when we censor ourselves.

  • HCD stresses prototyping - show and not talk. Quick and rapid prototyping.

  • Wonders whether there needs to be a facilitator hold the process of creating the empathy MOOC

  • Facilitator would speed the process up. Facilitator reflects back ideas and leads the process. Jumps in and navigates the process to balance empathy and creativity

  • HCD offers steps and tools

  • Looks forward to the workshop when Gerti and Sascha and ??? learn the process

  • Would be helpful if all the team members share the same tools and language

Goal is to create a comprehensive MOOC online, there is a need for that globally

The Human Centered Design have a MOOC, and a process

NVC community has a training curriculum

Core of MOOC is a foundation of developing an empathic way of being, and how do you learn the skills of an empathic way of being.

Prototype: created a website with some prototyping


Thought about individual lessons first, thinks a MOOC makes sense

Big difference if it’s an in person workshop or an online MOOC with lots of people, not all empathic tools will work with a large audience

Role plays for example (“Aufstellungsarbeit”) or systemic work/Gestalt are highly effective but not so in a MOOC


Imagines HCD process and go through it with a team, and then do some exercises in team, likes the idea of a facilitator.


Create hubs with facilitators but also self organized circles of 5-6


Groups form individually by watching videos, ideally form a team to go through process


Has participated in online world cafes with small groups and share circles where some people talked ¾ of the time. Wonders about having a time keeper

Content piece:

People reflect on content piece where people share in empathy circle

Have people read an article for example about Empathic Way of Being and then use it as basis to have a discussion in small circle

Role play with empathy-sympathy, share what that feels like and compare directly how it feels to have sympathetic vs empathic responses

MOOC or a course?


MOOC is a long term project, start with MVP and build on it

Everyone bring your mooc to the next meeting.


Have a small meeting -

Plan for the big thing.

2 hour is not enough. We don’t need much. Would be nice to plan the larger course

Start a 10 week course.

Facilitate people on the way.

On the end  they can say they got into the process.

They will say, “I’ve changed.” Have had a real experience.

We will led the workshop together.

Co-lead it alternately

Make it a design challenge in the HCD workshop

How long is each segment (3hrs meeting, 2 hrs reading for example, like in HCD)

Acquire a joint language

Host individual segments

Different host and responsibilities.

The HCD will be specialized.
