“Tumour markers in oncology”, national research grant founded for 6 months by the Italian Ministry of Health in the Department of Surgery of the Università di Roma Tor Vergata, 1986-87.


“Natural History of Crohn’s Disease after Surgical Resection” research grant founded by the “Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche” (National Research Council) of Italy (grant n.106014/ 04/8806545) to be performed in the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation under the supervision of Doctor Victor W. Fazio M.D., F.R.A.C.S., F.A.C.S. 1989-90.


“Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes from human colorectal cancer, functional activity against autologous tumour cells”, research funded by an institutional grant of the Research Program Committee of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (n. 3264) , research partners Claudio Fiocchi M.D., Department of Gastroenterology, and Jeffrey W. Milsom, M.D., F.A.C.S. Department of Colorectal Surgery a.y. 1990-1991.

Awarded with the Honorable Mention in the Resident Assay Contest of the Ohio Chapter of The American College of Surgeons for the scientific paper “Endoluminal Ultrasonography Accurately Predicts organ involvement in Pelvic Tumours, March 1991.


First prize winner 1992 for the basic science research in the Resident Research Forum of the Cleveland Surgical Society, with the research “Synergistic effect of Tumour Necrosis Factor Alpha and Interleukin 2 in the generation of CD+ Effectors from Human Colorectal Cancer Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes.


Winner of the Fogarty International Fellowship of the National Institute of Health of The United States of America, academic year 1991-1992.


“Role of intravenous ATP magnesium phosphate on the arterial flow in liver metastases and normal parenchyma in a murine model” research funded by the MURST (Italian Ministry of University and Research). 1994-1996.
