During her tenure at Emmaus Baptist Church, Reverend King served as the moderator for the Dover Baptist Association from 2006-2007. She has lead various workshops for Dover and co-lead a retreat for the WMU of VA.  Our pastor loves all types of music especially opera.  Her favorite composer is J. S. Bach. She is a member of a Centering Prayer group at Richmond Hill and takes an annual retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, Ky.

 Minister of Youth
Sylvia Coates

Sylvia has been the organist and choir director at Emmaus since January, 1969.  Recently, her title was changed to Minister of Music.  She directs the Adult Choir and the Children’s Choir. She graduated from Longwood College and Virginia Commonwealth University, receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Master of Education degree in early childhood education.

She is married to LeRoy Coates and they have three adult children and two granddaughters.  In addition to being our church’s minister of music, she is a 2nd grade teacher at New Kent Elementary School.

Praising God through music is a wonderful part of the Christian’s life and worship experience.  Sylvia rejoices that she is able to do this with her Christian family at Emmaus.
