SCIENCE AND VISUAL ARTS!
WHAT A WONDERFUL COMBINATION OF TEACHABLES!!!!!!
-the power of observation, creative thinking, illustrations, results...
"Science and art naturally overlap. Both are a means of investigation. Both involve ideas, theories, and hypotheses that are tested in places where mind and hand come together—the laboratory and studio. Artists, like scientists, study—materials, people, culture, history, religion, mythology— and learn to transform information into something else."
"There has long been a connection between art and science, one that can be traced back to the Egyptian pyramids. History proves that the two disciplines cannot exist without each other, enduring in constantly changing and evolving relationships."
Excerpts from a lecture by Robert Eskridge titled “Exploration and the Cosmos: The Consilience of Science and Art.”
Student Main Lesson Books -AWESOME Examples of student work! A must see!!!!
Skeleton Preparation -During a University Internship I worked as a Museum Curator. I cleaned animal skeletons by hand and with the aid of a colony of Dermestid beetles.
Vermicomposting initiative -Students engaged in our school's first and only composting and recycling program.
Gr. 9 Biotechnology Unit Plan -one of my favourite topics of discussion... the unit's title was "Playing with Life."
During a unit on ecosystems my students and I built a terrarium for our classroom .
Above, in my hand, is a picture of a juvenile Brown Snake, which spent a few days in our terrarium along with several other reptiles (for short periods of time), insects, and plants. On the windowsill you will also see a bouquet of Lilacs (I always had something from outside in that window).
