Family Literacy Initiative
Because parents are their children’s first and most important teachers, EMWP wants to support parents in their efforts to create an environment at home that fosters a love for reading and writing and helps their children and teens become confident, skillful writers. Through the Family Literacy Initiative, we offer [workshops] at different levels: for elementary students and their families, for middle school parents, and for high school teens and their parents or guardians.

For more information about attending one of these workshops or scheduling a parent or family workshop at your local library or school, please contact Kimberly Pavlock, EMWP Youth and Family Literacy Coordinator at kpavlock@emich.edu.

Price for all workshops (except the Family Writing Project Workshop series) is $450 for a 90-minute session.  The four-session Family Writing Project costs $1700.

If you are a non-profit organization or interested in bundling workshops, please contact Kim Pavlock at kpavlock@emich.edu for special pricing.

Teacher Testimonials

I just wanted to send my sincere thanks for bringing a wonderful Family Writing Night event to Adams STEM last evening!  Our parents/grandparents and children were totally engaged, creative, and happy to be working together throughout the night!

—Pam Baker, Bright Futures Site Coordinator at Adams STEM Academy

Pattengill held its first Family Writing Fun Night.  It was wonderful to see studentswriting side by side with their parents.  The students were proud of their writing and several of them shared their writing at the end of the workshop.  I think students understood for the first time that writing can be fun.  I am already looking forward to next year's family writing night!

—Lori Moizio, Pattengill Elementary School Teacher

Parent and Student Testimonials

At the close of each family literacy event, we ask students and parents to share two pluses and a wish about their workshop experience.  They have shared the following with us:

“[The Family Writing Fun Night] has a lot of pluses.   The different stations help with a diversity in writing techniques. . . . [Another] plus would be having this more often.  It gives parents a chance to interact with their children in an education setting.  It also allows parents to talk with other parents which in turn makes for a friendlier atmosphere that will follow through to other functions.” —Estabrook Elementary School Parent

“It’s relly fun and you lrn. But I wish to have this event more ofttin.” —Elementary School student

“I thought the Writing Workshop was great!  The enthusiasm of the presenters was phenomenal.” —Pattengill Elementary School Parent

“I had so much fun writing with my daughter” —King Elementary School Parent

“I really like it and it’s perfect.  I loved spending time with my family and this was a great way doing it.  Thank you!” —Alexander Elementary School Parent

“I love that this was an interactive activity that involved the entire family. This is our first time writing together as a family. I also like that all of our time was occupied being productive. [I wish] we were able to have workshops like this more often.”—Adams Upper/Lower Elementary Parent
