PE Reading/Writing Assignments

 
These assignments are worth 6 points each with a quiz adding up to 10 more points.  This writing rubric will be used when grading the summary.  Students should show in their summary they have a good grasp of the information and have developed an personal opinion based on experience and research on the topic.  See each assignment for specific information.

Grading (max of 6pts per assignment)

6pts - Done well.  All information is complete and correct.

4pts - Complete but answers may be incomplete or incorrect.

2pts - Incomplete with missing and/or incorrect information

 

 
Assignment #1 - Due Fri 2/1:  The New Science of Exercise & Benefits of Exercise

Read the two articles from Time Magazine about fitness.  Summarize the articles in an essay.  Be sure to include what the current state of fitness and health is in America (how many people workout), what amount of exercise is recommended, what counts as exercise, and what benefits exercise has.  Be sure to use standard essay format (intro, body, conclusion) and proper grammar.  See rubric for more details.
 
Goal:  I can describe the importance of exercise, fitness, and health.
 

 
Assignment #2 - Due Wed 2/6:  Exploring the Mysteries of Exercise  -  Fill out the Worksheet
 

Read the article Exploring the Mysteries of Exercise and use the worksheet to write 3 summary sentences for each section.  Finally, write a 3 paragraph summary of the most important benefits of exercise based on your opinion and the article. 

 
Goal:  I understand the importance of exercise to my overall health.
 

 
Assignment #3 - Due Wed 2/13:  Watch this YouTube Video! and read "Components of Fitness"  to fill out the Worksheet

    This is a quick overview of the five components of fitness.  These are important to know throughout this course. 
 
Goal:  I can list, describe, and provide examples of the 5 components of fitness.
 


 
Assignment #4 - Due Wed 2/20:  Physical Activity Prescription - Powerpoint - Worksheet
            • Review the Physical Activity Powerpoint and completely fill out the worksheet.
            • Be complete.
Goal:  I can describe exercise training principles and the F.I.T.T. principle.
 

 
 
Assignment #5 - Due Wed 2/27:  Cardiovascular Fitness - PDF File #1    -    PDF File #2    -    Worksheet
            • Review the articles on cardiovascular fitness.
            • Complete the worksheet.
Goal:  I can define cardiovascular fitness and how to train a person to have a high level cardiovascular fitness.
 

 
Assignment #6 - Due Wed 3/6:  Heart Rate Zone Training - Watch YouTube Video and read Powerpoint - Informational SheetWorksheet
    • Review the Heart Rate Zone Training Powerpoint and completely fill out the worksheet.
    • Be complete, don't cut corners.

Goal:  I understand the heart rate training zones and am able to differentiate between anaerobic and aerobic training.
I can complete a workout in the appropriate target heart rate zone.
 


 
Assignment #7 - Due Wed 3/20:  Flexibility - Mayo Clinic Article
            • Read the article.
            • Write a 1 page summary of the article.
            • Include:
              • Explain the 2 main benefits of improving flexibility.
              • Explain 5 of the "stretching essentials."
              • Explain when you should be cautious.
 
Goal:  I can describe benefits of flexibility and the essentials of stretching.
 

 
Assignment #8 - Due Wed 3/27:  Strength Training - LA Times Article - Spark Article - Strength Training Worksheet
            • Read both articles.
            • Complete the worksheet.
              • Be thorough.
              • Complete sentences.
Goal:  I can describe the importance and principles of strength training.
 

 
 
Assignment #9 - Due Wed 4/3:  Muscle Diagram - Diagram
Goal:  I am able to identify major muscle groups and provide exercises for each.
 

 
Assignment #10 - Due Wed 4/10:  Movement Terms - Worksheet
          • Use the WORLD WIDE WEB to define the terms on the worksheet.  Be specific and complete!
Goal:  I can understand several terms associated with fitness and sport.
