A beautifully cooked traditional dinner with the "Address to a Haggis" read by George made it all very solemn! Haggis, tatties, neeps and whisky sauce ably prepared by Angela, Sharon and Gill. Then we had a very convivial evening!!

Many thanks to all who helped over the weekend at the work party. We had a terrific turnout with 25 people on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. All the planned jobs were completed and one or two besides. Just look at the before and after pictures of Greg's meticulous work!! And a jolly good lunch too!

Hard work at the work party on 23rd and 24th June saw lot's of tidying up and fettling over the weekend! The Clubhouse was given a good clean and looks much nicer with the hanging baskets giving a smashing finishing touch. And lot's of weeding, grass cutting and filling potholes on the driveway keep the place looking smart. All followed by a good lunch on Saturday and a Jacob's Join on Sunday! Two nice days together!!

A new gate for the CLUB

A very successful April work party on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April saw the replacement of the gate into the club site.  The old gate was literally falling to pieces so a new galvanised gate has been hung thanks to the engineering and welding skills of our members!

Harry and Wilma Belshaw in "Clogs & Gansey"

In the latest issue of Cloggs & Gansey, the Newsletter of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society, there is a lovely tribute to Harry and Wilma Belshaw.

Long term ELWY members - their boat, Althea, is moored at the end of the grass, next to NB JUNE.

I have attached the relevant pages of Cloggs & Gansey for ELWY members to see.

Harry Belshaw is our living connection with the working boats of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, a treasure house of knowledge and skill, about the canal and how to work the canal.  A few years ago, during a year of water shortages, my boat was marooned down on the Bridgewater Canal, because the Wigan Flight was closed.  Then, suddenly the Wigan Flight was opened - but I was singlehanded.

Harry was one of the club members who came out to help me.  I was steering the boat.  About a quarter of the way up the Wigan Flight Harry paused his lock tending, came back to speak to me.  He said, You're a bit slow, aren't you?

Sorry, Harry, I said.
