This survey found that high school physics teachers’ instruction is mostly lecture and discussion with textbook and worksheet problems and an occasional lab activity. It was evident by teacher response that professional development is needed in the areas of instructional technology, special needs students, and student generated activities. Even though the physics teachers surveyed were less prepared that other science teachers, they felt confident in the subject knowledge.
With the push for technology, it does not surprise me that this is an area that needs to improve. Factors to consider are funding for resources and time; time for professional development and time for teachers to use and become competent and comfortable with technology use during instruction.
We know that teachers will regress to the “mean” and teach the way they were taught unless they are given the tools and the support to implement new strategies.
