Interested in composting for the garden?

Here is a list on what can and cannot be composted for the garden.

What you CAN compost

  • Animal manure (cow, chicken, pig and horse)
  • Coffee grounds and filters
  • Tea bags
  • Eggshells
  • Fireplace ashes
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Grass clipping
  • Nut shells
  • Hay and straw
  • Houseplants
  • Leaves
  • Yard trimmings
  • Saw dust
  • Napkins (as long as they don’t have non-compostable matter on them)
  • Compostable cups and plates

What you CANNOT compost

  • Yard trimmings treated with pesticides
  • Pet wastes (dog and cat feces, soiled Kitty litter)
  • Meat or fish bones and scraps
  • Fats, grease, lards, or oils
  • Diseased or insect ridden plants
  • Dairy products (e.g., butter, egg yolks, milk, sour cream, yogurt)
  • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs
  • Coal or charcoal ash
  • Cardboard (recycle it just not in the composter)
  • Paper (recycle it just not in the composter)
