Because of the restrictions caused by Covid-19, we are unable to provide opportunities to try lawn bowling this year. Hopefully, next year...
To introduce you to Elmwood and lawn bowling, please watch the video produced by Brent Lale of London ANews and the introduction to lawn bowling video on the subpage "Lawn Bowling 101". In 2017, Bowls Canada produced two new videos that can be seen by clicking on "links" in the navigation bar. They are both a great introduction to lawn bowling. The Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club is located at 17½ Edward Street, on the west side of Edward, mid-way between Bruce Street and Elmwood Avenue in London ON; ‘tucked’ in behind the houses. We celebrated our 100th anniversary in 2011. Two of our South London community sponsors boast of 35 and 65 year sponsorships. Do you enjoy sunshine and outdoor activities?
Do you want to have FUN while getting some exercise?
Do you want low cost entertainment?
Try the outdoor sport for all ages
Lawn bowling provides gentle, healthy exercise and competition in a relaxed social atmosphere. It is perhaps the only outdoor sport where men and women, young and old, ex-jocks and ex-loafers, can all compete on an equal footing. It is easy to learn, difficult to be good at.
Everyone is welcome to visit. Just watch games or join and receive free instruction from experienced coaches. No partner is needed. All you need are flat-soled shoes or sneakers (with no heels). Members are welcome to wear whatever clothes suit their style and comfort. The special balls (the bowls) used to play the game can be borrowed from the club. New members normally use the club's bowls until they decide to purchase a set of their own.
Unlike the sports of alley bowling and bocce ball, to which lawn bowling is sometimes compared, lawn bowling does not use a ball. It uses a bowl. If one can imagine a ball with the sides ‘squeezed-in’, this somewhat describes the shape of the bowl used in lawn bowling. The bowl is delivered so that it ‘rolls’ on the curved surface between the ‘squeezed-in’ sides. The way in which the lawn bowl is made – one ‘squeezed-in’ side slightly heavier than the other – forces the properly delivered bowl to follow a curved path; in fact – unless thrown at a very high speed – it is virtually impossible to make it follow a straight path. It is this feature of a curved path that gives lawn bowling its greatest challenges, interest, frustration, mystique, strategies and ultimate satisfaction. The gentle sport of lawn bowls shares this curved path feature with curling. Sometimes, lawn bowling is referred to as “curling on grass”. In fact, these two sports share many terms, such as skip, head, weight, draw, take-out, hog line, amount of ‘ice’/’grass’ and jitney, but not sweeping. The curved path feature gives rise to some interesting and varied elements of delivery technique and game strategies. From tradition, many of us have a ‘mental picture’ of lawn bowlers outfitted in white, long sleeved blouses or shirts and long skirts or pants. This is no longer the required attire for lawn bowling. For most events, attire is strictly the bowler’s personal choice.
From the latter part of May to mid-Sept., jitneys – the social, mainly-for-fun version of lawn bowls – are organized on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: evenings at 7:00 pm; and during day-time at 10am. Numerous competitive tournaments are organized at various irregular times and days.
We encourage visitors, spectators and potential bowlers at all of our events, whether they be jitneys, club tournaments or inter-club tournaments. We try to have a member available to greet you and share with you our knowledge of, information about and enthusiasm for this great outdoor activity. Do drop by and say hello, and stay awhile.
See if the grass is greener on our side of the fence,
COME and JOIN US FOR FUN and EXERCISE.
