History of Silver

Although the Aztecs were the first to mine silver, it wasn’t until after the Spaniards came that Mexico became famous for their silver and silver jewelry. The Conquistadors of Spain were very attracted to the rich silver and gold of Mexico. In order to mine the minerals, they used Natives as slaves. The Natives were put in very brutal conditions. In some ways, large mining companies treat their miners the same way. Even though Mexico was doing very well in their silver industry, when Jose De La Borda found a large amount of silver in 1716, it boosted Mexico’s economy and helped Spain’s Empire. Through the years, many jewelers and silversmiths were attracted to Mexico’s silver filled cities. Some were Taxco, Zacatecas, and Fresnillo.
