Toward Teaching Excellence in Higher Education

Biology Education Research

Research in the Theobald Lab focuses on excellent and effective teaching in higher education STEM classes. We use quantitative and sometimes qualitative approaches to: 1) identify effective education; 2) describe instructor practices that facilitate effective education; and 3) scale these practices to all classes in all STEM disciplines.

As an ecologist, I am also interested in how students learn and reason about ecological phenomena, quantitative data and analysis, and the natural world.

In my lab, people come first. Specifically, we appreciate and welcome everyone. Joyous and functional groups are more creative and more successful at solving complex problems, so we prioritize people in everything we do. Ultimately, we strive for our lab community to be a fun place to learn, a safe place to be vulnerable, and good place to do science.
