The Elks National Drug Awareness Program is the largest volunteer drug awareness program in the United States. We are very proud of our dedicated army of volunteers who freely give their time and talents to this most noble cause. The Elks are committed to eliminating the use and abuse of illegal drugs by all members of society and believe that in order to ensure a bright future for our country, it is essential that our children be raised in a drug-free environment.
The Terrebonne Red Ribbon Campaign, a parish-wide committee for supporting drug-free initiatives and measures in local middle and high school youth, has sponsored the TeamSpirit Leadership Conference for over 25 years. The conference, while costing over $15,000 to put on, only charges the participants the minimal amount that it must turn around and pay directly to the host site for usage over the 4-day/3-night retreat style program to cover building usage fees and insurance. All other funds for the event's activities are covered by donations and fundraisers.
The Houma Elks Lodge has taken an active role in recent years with helping to serve a meal and also supporting the activity financially, but only to a small extent where we have been able to do so.
This year's TeamSpirit Leadership Conference was held at Lumen Christi June 25th-28th. On Wednesday, June 26th, The Houma Lodge #1193 had 6 Elks and 3 Boy Scouts from Troop 820 help serve dinner for the 110 staff and participants.
