Lifelong Public Servant, Humanitarian to 'Officially' Name Carnival's Newest

'Fun Ship' in Dockside Ceremony at Port of Miami April 27

MIAMI, April 4 /PRNewswire/ --

Elizabeth Dole, whose tireless dedication to public service and humanitarian issues spans four decades and seven U.S. presidents, will serve as godmother to Carnival Cruise Lines' new Carnival Spirit, the first in a new series of 88,500-ton vessels for the line.

Mrs. Dole will "officially" name Carnival's newest "Fun Ship" at an exclusive, invitation-only ceremony held dockside at the Port of Miami Friday, April 27.

Following the ceremony, Mrs. Dole will be the guest of honor at a special VIP shipboard reception, then join more than 2,000 travel agents and dignitaries on a two-day preview voyage aboard the new 2,124-passenger vessel.

"We are honored to have Elizabeth Dole serve as godmother to the new Carnival Spirit, which promises to be a spectacular addition to the 'Fun Ship' fleet," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president. "From her remarkable public service career to her wide-ranging humanitarian efforts for the American Red Cross, Mrs. Dole has dedicated her life to helping others and we are very proud to have her name forever linked with this beautiful new vessel," he added.

A former president of the American Red Cross who resigned her position in 1999 to pursue her own campaign for the U.S. presidency, Mrs. Dole's impressive public service career began with her appointment as Deputy Assistant to President Nixon for Consumer Affairs in 1971.

Over the years, she has directed U.S. public policy serving as a member of the Federal Trade Commission, Secretary of Transportation under President Reagan -- the first woman ever to hold that position -- and Secretary of Labor under President Bush.

During her eight-year tenure as president of the American Red Cross, the world's foremost humanitarian organization, she initiated a wide range of programs to assist natural disaster victims and benefit at-risk youth while transforming the organization's methods for collecting, testing and distributing the nation's blood supply.

For her lifelong dedication to public service, Mrs. Dole has been recognized by numerous civic, social service and philanthropic organizations and has received honorary doctorate degrees from more than 40 colleges and universities.

Mrs. Dole's role as godmother marks the beginning of a series of introductory activities for the new Carnival Spirit. Following its two-day preview voyage, the vessel will depart Miami April 29 on its inaugural 16-day Panama Canal cruise, arriving in Los Angeles May 15.

Following various introductory functions on the West Coast, the Carnival Spirit will then operate a summer schedule of seven-day Alaska voyages. Also included in the Carnival Spirit's inaugural 2001 season are two 12-day Hawaii cruises and a 14-day Panama Canal cruise from San Diego to Miami, positioning the vessel for a unique eight-day "exotic" Caribbean program from that port beginning Nov. 3.

As the first in a new series of "Fun Ships," the Carnival Spirit will feature a number of innovative amenities and facilities, including a spectacular outdoor wrap-around promenade, the line's first wedding chapel, and the highest percentage of ocean view and balconied staterooms in the Carnival fleet.

The ship's numerous dining options will include a two-level, reservations- only supper club featuring crab claws from Miami Beach's world-famous Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant -- the first time the delicacies have ever been offered on a cruise ship menu.

Other dining venues will include a two-level formal restaurant, a patisserie, and a two-deck-high poolside eatery offering breakfast, lunch and dinner alternatives, and a 24-hour pizzeria. All of these options are part of Carnival's Total Choice Dining(SM), cruising's most comprehensive dining program offering the widest variety of formal and casual choices at sea.

The vessel's 12 passenger decks will also house a three-deck-high show lounge offering original Las Vegas-style productions, an expansive two-level health and fitness club, a duty-free shopping mall and the "Fun House," an enclosed children's play area featuring an arts and crafts center and a computer lab.

A nine-deck-high atrium providing easy and convenient access to 16 bars, lounges and nightspots, along with four swimming pools, a corkscrew water slide, five whirlpools and a full gambling casino will be included, as well.

Carnival Cruise Lines is a member of the exclusive World's Leading Cruise Lines alliance which also includes Holland America Line, Cunard Line, Seabourn Cruise Line, Costa Cruises and Windstar Cruises. Together, these member lines share a commitment to quality and value, offering cruise vacations that appeal to a wide range of lifestyles and budgets and sail to some of the world's most exciting destinations.
