Life Cycle: Elf owls breed annually. The Male elf owls attract females by calling from a cavity at a possible nest site and fly out while calling. Elf owls reproduce by having a kind of intercourse. These calls are started during April and end by July when the owls are reproducing. About 1-5 eggs are delivered by a fertilized female elf owl. There gestation period is up to 24 days long. The nestlings are fed by the female or the blind snakes that are brought to the nest. The food for the owls is hunted by the male elf owl. Young offspring become fully fledged at 28-33 days after hatching. In the wild, they can reach up to 14 years of age.
