are urging Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to yank one of its prized elephants from its San Diego show after the US Department of Agriculture cited the circus for failure to properly treat and diagnose the elephant’s illness. USDA inspectors last month in Colorado Springs found that Sarah was suffering from a pus-like discharge when she urinated. It was noted in her medical records in April.
The USDA report says that circus handlers were not treating the condition as a senior circus veterinarian had instructed. Circus veterinarians say Sarah, a 54-year-old Asian elephant who has been with the circus more than three decades — has had a chronic condition since at least 1997 and that it is not serious. They are appealing last month’s USDA citation, which alleges the circus violated the Animal Welfare Act.
