Curriculum Vitae

Short bio

I am Associate Professor in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) research group in the department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. I hold a doctoral degree in Computer Science (Dr. rer. nat.) from the Free University of Berlin and a Diploma in Computer Science from the Technical University of Munich. I have held research and teaching positions at the Technical University of Munich (2002-2003); the Free University of Berlin (2003-2007); the Semantic Technology Institute (STI) Innsbruck at the University of Innsbruck,  Austria (2007-2009); and at the Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany (2010 - 2012); before joining WAIS in November 2012.

My primary domain of research is at the intersection between knowledge technologies and crowd computing. In particular I am interested in socially and economically motivated aspects of creating and using semantically enabled content on the Web, and in paradigms, methods and techniques to facilitate large-scale collaboration and incentivize participation. Recently I've been looking at particular classes of Web systems that aim at massive crowd engagement: citizen science platforms such as Zooniverse and EyeWire; crowdsourcing applications creating economic and social good through the use of open data; or universal knowledge bases such as DBpedia, Wikidata, or the Linked Open Data Cloud.

I had the opportunity to investigate these topics in over twenty European and national research projects. Among them I would highlight Knowledge Web (EU FP6 NoE), TripCom (EU FP6 STREP), Salero (EU FP6 IP), LarKC (EU FP7 IP), Active (EU FP7 IP), SOA4All (EU FP7 IP), Service Web 3.0 (EU FP7 SA), INSEMTIVES (EU FP7 STREP), RENDER (EU FP7 STREP), PlanetData (EU FP7 NoE),  EUCLID (EU FP7 SA), OpenDataMonitor (EU FP7 STREP), WDAqua (EU H2020 MSCA ITN), EDSA (EU H2020 CSA), and ODINE (EU H2020 IA), among which I have coordinated or am coordinating TripCom, Service Web 3.0, INSEMTIVES, RENDER, PlanetData, EUCLID, and ODINE. Upon joining WAIS I am also contributing to the SOCIAM project, a large UK program grant studying the design and evolution of socio-technical systems on the Web.

I published around 100 scientific papers, organized many workshops addressing the research topics just mentioned, and initiated several training activities for doctoral students and junior researchers such as the PhD Network Berlin Brandenburg and the Knowledge Web PhD Symposium series organized at the European Semantic Web Conference ESWC since 2006. Other educational activities include teaching Master and Bachelor courses at the Free University of Berlin, University of Innsbruck, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the University of Southampton; the founding and organization of the ESWC summer school; the Asian Semantic Web School; the IEEE Summer School on Semantic Computing; and the Semantic Web Services Winter Retreat; as well as the management of the education service within Semantic Technologies Institute International (STI), an association bringing together major players in the field of semantic technologies. I am co-founder of semsphere, a professional training company in the same area, under the umbrella of STI International and coordinated the EUCLID project, which develops a curriculum for data professionals interested in Linked Data. As of February 2015 I am the scientific director of the European Data Science Academy (EDSA), a European project which develops open courseware and delivers a broad demand analysis of data science skills across European countries.

I am or have been track co-chair of the ISWC 2015; general co-chair of the EDF 2013, track co-chair of ACM Hypertext 2013; general chair of the ESWC 2012; program chair of the ESWC 2011; sponsorship chair of the International Semantic Web Conference ISWC 2011; track chair of the ESWC 2010; co-chair of the 3rd European Semantic Technologies Conference ESTC2009; technical chair of the IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing ISCC2009; poster/demo chair at the 6th European Semantic Web Conference ESWC2009, and at the 3rd Asian Semantic Web Conference ASWC 2008; workshop chair at the Future of the Internet Symposium FIS2008.
