Artist Statement

Michigan landscapes have been my subject matter for the past few years. I've enjoyed looking at the lay of the land, colors, textures and vistas through the changing seasons.

Painting landscapes provides me a means of creating a finished piece of art that can define the space, color, form and line without the constraints of highly defined subject matter. I work toward giving the viewer the ability to stand in the landscapes I create and find a sense of space.

The oil paint medium provides a means of mixing and layering that accommodates a more instinctual and subtle way of working. I use collaged photographs which I put together from many different shoots. I attempt to keep things loose when painting to allow the unexpected to happen.
