Eastern Theater Activities 2012-2013
Fall Play – A dramatic or comedic play production with supporting aspect of technical theater culminating in weekend performances. Auditions required for casting. Students may participate in all aspects of theater including lighting/sound, production crew, props, makeup, costumes, ad sales, ushering and concessions.
Broadway Cabarets – fall/spring – students perform, in small setting, songs from Broadway in order to display their vocal talent in an evening of music. Auditions required and are typically 2 weeks prior to event.
Cappies – Student critics attend other high school plays and musicals in the Philadelphia area. They hold discussions pre/post shows, write critical reviews eligible for publication online or in the newspaper, nominate actors and shows for awards. Eastern High School belongs to the Philadelphia, PA/NJ Chapter. The year ends with the formal Cappies Gala Awards Ceremony. For more info www.cappies.com
Musical – A musical production which includes all aspect of musical theater including choreography, vocal instruction, orchestra and technical theater. Auditions required for casting. Students are invited to be involved in any aspect of the musical theater including the orchestra, production crew, lighting/sound, props, costumes, makeup, ad sales, ushering and concessions.
NJDFL Team Theater – New Jersey Drama & Forensic League holds statewide drama competitions with individual or team events. Competitions run from October to February finishing with the State Championships. Eastern High School Host Competition is in February. A Showcase of student event pieces is held during the year. One Act Plays Festivals – Student produced, directed and performed One Act Plays. The One Act Plays Festival is judged by alumni of Eastern’s Theater program and award outstanding work by student performer, directors and technicians.
Sound & Lighting Club – Students design and work on all the technical requirements of the productions ie Fall Play, Musical, cultural programs, Awards Nights, One Acts and other school events. Students can also be trained, and on approval by the Board of Education, to serve as paid technicians for the Eastern Center for the Performing Arts.
Theater Club – Student organization that directs and administrates student drama activities for plays, social events etc. The theater club meets monthly and is the best place to get up to date information about all theater activities at Eastern.
International Thespian Honor Society – Chapter 5214 honors students for their involvement in the Theater arts at Eastern High School. Students accrue points by participating in the theater activities during their high school years. An Induction ceremony is held at the end of each year to recognize those students who have accumulated points that represent hundreds of hours of work in the theater arts.
