Chiropodist/Podiatrist – what’s the difference?

The term Chiropodist has been traditionally used in Britain for many years but it is not recognised in other countries. Podiatrist, on the other hand is internationally recognised and more practitioners prefer to use this title now to keep in line with our foreign colleagues and their pool of research and knowledge. The official name change to podiatry reflected the upgrading of education levels to a degree qualification and an expansion in the scope of practice by the profession.

Chiropodists and Podiatrists are now, by law, fully protected titles. To find out more about this visit www.hcpc-uk.org A podiatrist is a health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs. The conditions podiatrists treat include those resulting from bone and joint disorders such as arthritis and soft-tissue and muscular pathologies as well as neurological and circulatory diseases. Podiatrists are also able to diagnose and treat any complications of the above which affect the lower limb, including skin and nail disorders, corns, callouses and ingrown toenails. Foot injuries and infections gained through sporting or other activities are also diagnosed and treated by podiatrists.
