Electronic portfolios and virtual lab notebooks are a great way for your students to document their progress through your class and showcase their best work, and reflect on what they have learned. They can also function as a place to "turn in" their work. These are especially applicable to in-school academies where students are cohorted together for most of their high school careers.

Portfolios can be adapted to any content area, and science teachers can especially benefit from incorporating virtual lab notebooks for students to document and reflect on their laboratory experiences.

Teachers may even consider creating their own virtual teaching portfolio to send out when seeking jobs, grants, fellowships, etc.

We will focus on using Google Apps, and particularly Google Sites as the primary tool for portfolios. This will also be useful as Google Apps for Wake County rolls out in the near future. It's easier than you'd think!
