This is a large tree, the pics were recorded from near Yamuna Nagar in Haryana...
Please confirm/correct the id, I think this can be Terminalia elliptica Willd. ..
Terminalia bellerica most likely. I've never seen this leaf shape in T. elliptica.
Underside of leaves showing glands is helpful in identifying Terminalia spp.
Terminalia bellerica for sure.

This tree is growing in a community park in Panipat... and many others are at places..
This time only fruits were recorded, is this Terminalia bellerica ??
Terminalia bellerica

Name: Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb.
Family: Combretaceae
Tamil Name: தான்றி
Location: KFRI campus, Peechi, Trissur, Kerala
Date: 13 Dec 2014
Medicinally important fruit.

This is a lofty tree and is occasionally planted as avenue..
These pics are recorded from the campus of a College near my native place..
Expert opinion is invited to please validate/correct the id..
efi page on Terminalia chebula
I doubt that it is T. chebula because in that species the leaves are not usually clustered together at the tips of branches. Also I don't see characteristic leaf glands.
There is a chance for T. bellerica in which leaf glands are often indistinct and which usually has prominent leaf scars.
To me it seems to be Terminalia bellerica.
This looks like Terminalia bellerica to me too.

Attached are pictures of Terminalia bellirica captured at a cultivated garden in Mumbai in March 2013.
I used to watch this tree everyday and its journey from being completely bare to becoming green again was spectacular.
Beautiful set of photographs!

Very good photographs ...

Tall tree seen en-route Alibag.. I think this could be Terminalia bellirica??
Please validate..

The plant may be Terminalia pruniodes
The foliage and the inflorescences suggest it to be Terminalia bellirica.

Bond between the two trees SN Jan15 05 : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (3)
I observe two attached trees. Terminalia bellirica and palm tree in a lake bund, near Guduvanchery, Chennai. The bond between the two tree is strong and sustaining.
Interesting pictures!
The callus formation could be to self-heal the wound created by constant bruising of the palm tree while swaying in wind. But it looks like it won't sway anymore!
You are correct ..., thanks.
I see one tree lean on another often and often then very strangle the support and strangler is often a fig
but this is amazing a terminalia taking support, for a long time (judging from the callous) ...
I wonder why did it need to grow in a leaning angle... that it needed support...??
And what you said about the bond is heart-warming... just like one human being needing support from another...

I saw this big tree by the side of the road. Could this be some Terminalia? T. bellerica? Pics were taken in March 2016.
Also check with comparative images at Terminalia
Pl. also see images of Terminalia alata
This looks like Beheda [Terminalia bellirica]. Please check this link :
Google Groups
The third photo is apparently having large dried fruits with five broad wings suggesting T. alata, however the characteristic foliar glands are not clear in the images.
It looks like Terminalia bellirica to me, too.
Right. Now I have detected typical fruits of T. bellirica on the third image. Earlier observation was some optical illusion.

Marathi name; Beheda
One of the ingradients of Triphala churna
Today at Sagargad,Alibag

Bahera is valuable herb used in cancer formulations. Fortunately I was with the Healers collecting it with Buchanania and Careya for formulation. Later I visited Delhi with this formulation to give it to cancer patient with no hope, with much hope.

VALMIKI :OBSERVER OF NATUREIf you go through Ramayan by Valmiki (Geeta Press Gorakh pur), you will be surprised to note that the poet has mentioned 136 distinct plants in his Ramayan. To me only a great observer can do that. I have gone through the Ramayan by Valmiki, line by line to find out the plants he has mentioned in Sanskrit. I tried to find out the Scientific name of each one, with the help of books. I am not sure about the identity of 13 plants mentioned by Valmiki.
Plant lovers can think about a botanical garden, where all the plant species mentioned by Valmiki will find place. I tried for this project with different Govt and NonGovt agencies without any success.
Attaching an image of a plant, mentioned as Bibhitaka, this is BELLIRIC MYROBALAN. Scientifically it is Terminalia bellirica. Wish to send you images of other plants mentioned by Valmiki, in due course of time.

Harra/ Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)?: On 18/3/08 at 23 Mile, Duars, West Bengal in the core area of the forest. It was leafless with fruits fallen at ground. .., who was with me, told me about the Id of this tree.
I hope the Id is correct. Fruit appears a bit confusing with Baheda (Terminalia bellirica) to me. I don't any other shots. Here is a link with some pictures:
http://images.google.co.in/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tuninst.net/MyanM...
- These have been identified as Terminalia bellirica by .. now.
- The fruits are  definitely do not belong to T.chebula. The fruits look like those of T.bellerica (Bahera).  The fruits are not spherical in Chebula.  Roughly spindle shaped and not smooth."

at village: Pishvi

Maharashtra.

This could be most probably Terminalia bellerica. common name Belleric myrobalan used in the preparation of 'triphala' -  herbal medicine.
..... shall i conclude it is "behda" (Terminalia b or is it as .. said Terminalia sp, 'Though behda seems to be little more common in the adjoining forested areas.
The identity is revealed only when it fruits.  Watch out for the fruits.

I think you wanted to type T. bellirica...
May Be Sir but the person from that herbal garden were saying that it is Harad not bahera. Initially after seeing the label of plant ie Termialia tinctoria i got confused and when enquired they said we dont know scientific
name but it is Badi harad (Large harad) so i wrote T chebula.
The branching pattern, size & shape of leaves, colour of young foliage, lvs glaucous beneath... all pointing to T. bellirica.

This looks like Beheda [Terminalia bellirica].
But the leaf stalk is much longer in my post than this description "Leaves are 8-20 cm long, 7.5-15 cm wide, on stalks 2.15 cm long...." at http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Baheda.html.
Have many of these trees on my property at Shahpur. Please also check my photographs of this which are in the archives of this group.
My picture of Baheda (Terminalia bellirica) for comparison

I am now convinced that the plant/tree is T. bellirica as have been identified by you. Initially i was hesitant because -
1) because of the description of 2.15 cm long leaf-stalk as in - http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Baheda.html
2) in my images all leaves originate from the apex of the shoot, whereas your images at - http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20p?see=I_PAO1999&res=640 and at efi thread show alternate leaves. Most other images available in the net also tally with both of you.
However, after more search found my target at -
Moreover, wiki says, "Two varieties of T. belerica are found in India..." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminalia_bellirica.
May I request you one thing. Try to capture the glands at the base of mature leaf. I am sure you will do that.
Unfortunately I don't have good photograph of these.
I recently learnt that every Terminalia has unique gland structure. Why not have good photographs of each?
This request is even to other members.
Pl don't worry ...., ...can't do that :) beacuse T. bellirica is perhaps the only species (in India at least) that do not have foliar glands. Sorry to disappoint you :)
However, the posted pictures are of Terminalia bellirica as identified by .... We have observed variations in the size and shape of leaves as well as fruits in this species.

Recently I heard from someone that the glands are there as swollen petiole rather than the conventional glands seen in other Terminalia species.
Please check this link : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vFs7Q33sU18KquK2YLkGesQdIR15hes2qnlxNM3jqys/edit
I beg your pardon, Sir, do you mean those rusty dots on the blades are glands?
That's what I was given to understand though I found no mention of it in any reference books.
Thanks ... So far I have not seen glands in T. bellirica, so, I would be happy to see them. Even though I could not see the glands clearly in the picture, I believe in your own observation. However, Cooke in his Flora of Bombay Presidency has mentioned that this species has no glands (I am sharing the scanned image of the particular page, may be in a separate mail). The dots on the leaf are not glands, I think.
"Glands absent."
Flora of Madhya Pradesh by BSI confirms the quote of ...

Sending photographs of 2 Beheda saplings on my property at Shahapur. There seems to be a hint of glands in some of the leaves. Anyway will try and get some more photographs tomorrow to settle the issue.
I too have never seen glands on T bellerica leaves.
Please give us big closeups. It would be a very much favour if you kindly arrow mark one image so as to help me, a layman, locate the glands.
Please visit the following links to have a close look at glands on the leaves of Terminalia spp.

That's fair enough ..., but please take another look at the photograph.
Some pictures with close view of Bahera with new red leaves.
Please also read Cooke's remark on the glands (2nd para).
It may be a very rare occurrence, but I have never come across so far.

Let's here from other members about their observations, too.

Yesterday I happen to attend a slideshow/presentation where a botanist (Not active on Net) showed a series of Terminalia leaves from different species. She had tried to document the differences and characteristics of glands indifferent individual species. What I learnt was T. bellerica often has glands which are not at the base of the leaves but in the petiole itself which appears slightly swollen midway in its length. It stimulated my curiosity which made me write yesterday's request to ...This is something different than what ... observations. When I checked elsewhere in whatever data available to me what I got is No glands in T. bellerica. I will check with her again and if possible will try to collect those pictures for opinion.
Your note above prompted me to check some literature, and first thing I discovered what you wrote. In Flora of China it is clearly written and illustrated that unlike other species whether glands are generally present at the tip of petiole (or say base of leaf blade) in T. bellirica the two glands are present at about the middle of petiole.
Now coming to the presence of the species in India, The Flora of British India differentiates two varieties (rather three of which we ignore one right now).
var: typica (syn: T. eglandulosa) No glands at the apex of petiole
var. belerica, two glands at apex of the petiole beneath the leaf
unfortunately no mention is made about the places of distribution of two varieties.
Faced with this confusion I rushed to the Herbal Garden in Punjabi Bagh (6 km away) and a garden in our area whether this tree grows, and found that there is no trace of any glands any where on the petiole in our area.
We should as such be looking at three variants (whether they have any taxonomic status or not be ignored)
1. The common Indian form with no glands at all
2. The form with two glands at the tip of petiole as mentioned in FBI
3. The form with two glands in the middle of petiole as mentioned in Flora of China. It would be interesting to know if this form grows in India also.
I also read an old article from Transanctions of Linnaean Society Vol. 17, 1837, a commentary by Hamilton, in which two forms of Bahara (perhaps meaning Baheda) (T. bellirica) are recognised: Greater bahara or Bahara major with larger fruits and Smaller bahara or Bahara minor with smaller fruits, described from Duriapur and Domdoho, respectively (wonder what are these places).
Perhaps some one can throw some more light on this important medicinal plant of India.
The Traditional Healers of India divide Terminalia chebula fruits in over 30 different types based on type of fruit including Abhya, Chetki etc.
Similarly on the basis of fruit types Bahera i.e. Terminalia bellirica is also having tens of types. These types are not mentioned in Taxonomic literature, so far.
I hope members would concentrate to solve puzzle of types based on glands in India. It would be real job because internet is full of inconsistent information.
I have just photographed the underside of T bellirica leaves.
Photo is attached here. These were new leaves.
Baheda flower picture is also attached for the reference.
Concentrate on petiole to locate any insignificant glands as ... has done in another thread.

Petiolar glands in Terminalia bellirica [Beheda]: Was at my property at Shahapur today. Managed to check just the one Beheda tree. Noticed that almost all the leaves had glands on their petioles. Sending a few photographs.
This is incredible, ...! Thanks for the pictures and your great efforts.
You have seen the form (with glands) after Roxburgh and Dr. Almeida in India, I think.
I want to tell Hooker, Brandis, Gamble... that this form DOES occur in S.India, and can be seen it in ... garden!!!
When you find time, please try to compare this tree (leaf, flower, fruit etc) with the non-glandular one to check if there is any other difference between these two forms. Are the mature leaves in this tree possess glands too?
This seems to be supporting what ... and Flora of China report. Perhaps Hooker, etc. were ignoring these glands on petiole and just concentrating on glands at the tip of petiole tip, or they what they called glands on petiole tip would be just these, an interesting thing to investigate. It would be a good exercise if all members concentrate on this aspect, or some really find a Baheda with glands near the tip of petiole.
Studied 2 sets of leaves from the same tree. Also found that in addition to the glands already featured in my previous mail, there were also black dots [? glands] at the apex of the petioles in some of the leaves. Sending a few photographs to showcase these.
I checked many branches of my tree and none has any glands near the tip of petiole.
I will check other trees too.
I could not detect any glands in my Delhi specimens anywhere on petiole, photographed earlier. I will explore more soon,
This tree (with glands) belongs to the variety 2: bellirica (as belerica) of C.B.Clarke (in Hooker's FBI).
This is what Roxburgh described as T. belerica based ONLY on the presence of two glands. He named the most common non-glandular form as a different species namely T. eglandulosa and later renamed as T. moluccana, which is now synonymous to C.B.Clarke's Terminalia bellirica var. typica.
The number and position of the glands seem to be variable as we can see from these pictures. Some have two pairs of glands, one at the base of leaf-blade and the other on the petiole. In some the glands located at the middle and in some near tip of the petiole. These glands are somewhat inconspicuous when compare to that of other species. I don't know if the glands persist or disappear when the leaves mature. At any case, this is really interesting. If we find some solid differences, then the previous status can be reinstated!

Is this Kusum Tree, Schleichera oleosa?
Experts kindly confirm.
Or some Terminalia?
This is Beheda [Terminalia bellirica]. Glands on the lamina of the leaves can also be observed.
I have been seeing these trees for a few years now, was always curious to know its identity.
Glands on the lamina of the leaves....you mean the dark dots seen along the veins?

request to inform wether u have plants like terminalia belirica and rododendron arborium:  im studying m.pharm in acharya and b.m.reddy college of pharmacy. i need terminalia bellirica and rododendron arborium for my project work. please inform me
I know places where T. bellerica grow in Kerala and Karnataka.
If this would help, please write to me.
Yes, T. bellerica is available in Kerala
i am staying in banglore, soladevanahalli
I have seen two trees in indiranagar park opposite indiranagar club, and one in BWSSB behind indiranagar club.
Terminalia bellerica saplings are available in nurseries in Bangalore. Try around the places. You may also check the nursery inside Lalbagh. But I am not sure of the availability of Rhododendron species

Immature post : for ID:  This pic I have posted earlier or not, no sure about it. But this was lying in my pending IDs for almost 6 months. All I could recollect it was clicked in month of May`12. Where and what, I have no idea. Where are the others pics of the parts of the plant/climber/tree, I am afraid of that, too. May be I cant recollect during my extensive field trip during those days at Matheran or at Barvi for its whereabouts.
All that I can guess about are Anogeissus latifolia, Ceiba pentandra or Lophopetalum wightianum ! POSTING IT FOR ID PURPOSE.
I strongly feel this to be Lannea coromandelica.
The season matches too.
The photographs of flower differ from region to region and also according to phase of maturity. I have seen completely yellow flowers as well as flowers with strong red tinge as seen here. Often the petals are bigger in some phase while the stamens are bigger at different phase. This is my perception.
Will wait for comments.
Attaching my pictures of Lannea coromandelica.
..., on Indian Flora, wrote that this is Terminalia bellerica

Fruit Shape of Terminalia Bellirica : 6 posts by 3 authors. 2 images.
As per info on web, Terminalia Bellirica fruits are round as in first picture. Do the second one are very raw, young fruits of
Terminalia Bellirica as mentioned in flowers of india?

I think the second picture is Terminalia chebula

First picture = Terminalia bellirica
Second picture = Terminalia chebula

Pl. have a re-look in view of a reply from another thread:
I wish to state further that the T.chebula fruits are green and never be  brown
I have gone through images in efi site and prima facie agree with ...:
Request further views pl.
Thanks to all. Have made the changes in my flickr notes some time back; not sure when.
I agree with ... It is Terminalia bellirica only.

Fruit image of Terminalia Bellirica in FOI is of Terminalia chebula as per discussions in efi thread at

Yes sir its Terminalia chebula.
I just found a link with same image used and mentioned as Terminalia chebula.
http://www.terraternal.com/Products/ProductDetails/cx/Terminalia-Chebula/619/168.aspx

I disagree. The second picture do not match T.chebula fruits. There are two kinds of fruits in T.bellerica one rounded and another long.
I think the photograph in the website is not authoritative.

I wish to state further that the T.chebula fruits are green and never be brown !

I'm posting for the first time in this group. This is a small tree, that I've encountered while going through the open and kind of scrub jungle like area at T. S. School compound area, Hakimpet (V), Hyderabad (suburbs).
My accompanied person who is a secutity there, told that, deer are particularly fond of its fruits and Deer Hunters generally lay ambush near these trees when they fruit.
So, I just wanted to know about this tree.
Date/Time- 23/09/18, 9.00 am
