  • Shifting Faculty Perceptions and Use of Active Learning CBE Life Sciences article titled: A Vision and Change Reform of Introductory Biology Shifts Faculty Perceptions and Use of Active Learning From the abstract: "Increasing faculty use of active-learning (AL) pedagogies in college classrooms is a persistent challenge in biology education. ... Interviews revealed that instructors shifted their definitions of AL and talked more about how to assess student learning over the 3 years of the project. Collaboration, feedback, and time may have been important factors in the reform, suggesting that small shifts over time can accumulate into real change in the classroom."  Click here for article.

  • Faculty Learning Community and Improved Student Learning - this is an article on how having a Faculty Learning Community helped Faculty Collaboration to transform a Large-Enrollment Course from Lecture- to Student-Centered.Faculty learning communities (FLC) allow for exchanges of ideas among instructors. In this article, the authors report how the collaborative work of the FLC led to increased use of active-learning strategies. Also, there appeared to be student learning gains associated with the percentage of classroom time spent in active-learning modes. Click me for the full article.

  • Easy does it! Socrative quiz in class Today I had the pleasure of speaking to Kim Lee after her lipid metabolism lecture with the Medical first-year students during which she used Socrative for in-class quiz questions. According to Kim Lee who is using Socrative for the second time after having used it successfully in her Dental first-year tutorial last October, it is really easy to use! Moreover, the students seemed to have responded well to the quizzes. An example of the class participation is shown below. We now have a new Socrative champion in our department!   • [Teaching] Using iBooks Author I recently attended a workshop conducted by Dave Caleb at CDTL to learn how to use the iBooks Author. This is needed to write iBooks that could be interactive books for your students. I found a link to a video you can check out to get some basic ideas: iBooks tutorial. I am happy to meet to discuss how to use the programme and also ways we can use for our students.
