About me

My writing and editing self
I am a freelance writer and editor with almost 25 years' experience in that field. My story "The Plumber's Portal" appeared in the anthology Dimensio
nal Abscesses; a collection of stories about places you don't want to go. My science fiction short story "Solara Nova" was published in FlagShip magazine; two fantasy shorts, “The Ghost of Edinburgh Castle” and "The Caprine Catastrope," were featured on the Every Photo Tells . . . podcast; and my flash fiction has appeared on The Melting Potcast.

On the e
diting side, I have done everything from books of poetry to full-length novels for a variety of small publishers and independent authors. Some of my recent work has included The Way of the Gun: A Bushido Western Anthology compiled by Scott Roche, The Starter by Scott Sigler, and Smoke Stories: Tales of a Volunteer Firefighter by Mike Davis. I have also edited the work of my husband, podcaster Keith Hughes (Borrowed Time, Stolen Time, and The Guerrilla Poet).

My music self
I've played piano for as long as I can remember and started lessons at age 6. I also sing and play a few band instruments. I grew up in a family where music was everywhere all the time, and Mom and Dad were always in some band or another. They still do music in their seventies, my two sisters still sing, and I plan to do music until I drop dead. I minored in music at Adrian College (graduated in 1986) and turned it into a bachelor's degree (Rochester College, 2003) and a master's degree (Oakland University, 2006). I have been a school accompanist, church pianist, church organist, and director of music. Currently, I play piano, teach music classes, and administer the music and theatre departments at Rochester College.

My other-stuff self
I love sports. You'd never know it, because I'm such a klutz that I do well to walk across a room without tripping over a carpet fiber. But I love to watch Detroit Tigers baseball, Detroit Lions football, and NASCAR (go Jeff Gordon!).

I love to read. My favorite books are fantasy like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, and George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. (Apparently, you have to have an R in your middle name to be among my favorite authors.) I also love writers like James Herriot (All Creatures Great and Small) and Laura Ingalls Wilder (the Little House books).

I love to travel. I've been to 43 of the 50 United States, and the other 7 are on my bucket list. I've visited Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom (England and Scotland), Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria. One day, I want to go to Australia.

I love numbers. My degree at Adrian College was in math and I'm still a math geek. When I'm number-crunching, I often forget to eat. I celebrate Pi Day on March 14 and am fascinated by little facts like "The year 2040 is the same distance from 2015 as 1990 is."

I am a weather geek. I am awed by storms and weather patterns and how they happen. Recently, I joined the ranks of trained spotters for the National Weather Service.

I am a developer of game levels. Visit www.webccgame.com, click on "Play" and look for the one called "Chip's Adventures by jlhughes2." Those are all mine. The levels that other people have created are really awesome too.

Some other random jobs I've had: hotel maid, hamburger flipper, weeder of bank landscaping, Kelly girl, computer consultant, insurance and securities agent, church secretary...

My family

I grew up the oldest of three girls in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Dad put in 40 years at Ford Motor Company and Mom worked various part-time jobs (in addition to her full-time job of raising the three of us). I met Keith Hughes when he came to visit a friend when I was attending Adrian College. We got married in 1986 and had our daughter Laura in 1989. I'm not in Ypsi anymore, but I still live in southeastern Michigan with Keith and Laura
and a gray-and-white cat named Gandalf.
