References to people in your article:

First reference -- First name and last name

Second reference -- last name only

Teachers

First reference -- Mr. or Ms. and first name and last name

Second reference -- last name only

Example -- Mr. James Hatten teaches the journalism class.  Hatten also oversees the Broadcast Journalism class.

Students

First reference -- First name and last name with some reference to year in school.  Use senior, junior and sophomore.  If the student is a middle school student, use freshman, eighth-grader, seventh-grader, sixth-grader, etc.

Second reference -- last name only

Example -- Sophomore Drew Johnson won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of one minute, 1.20 seconds.  It was a career best time for Johnson, who also won the 100 freestyle in 50.12.

Titles

Make sure to get the official, correct title for a person and refer to them as such in the earliest possible reference to them in the article.
