What does one do outside office or work hours? Quite a lot, sometimes! Here are some of my interests:

  • Reading! Mostly fiction, and I have a vast array of favorite writers: Dick Francis, Robert Ludlum, Jeffrey Archer, Tom Holt, Terry Pratchett, Robert Heinlein, Agatha Christie, Matthew Reilly (if you haven't read any of his books... I can only tell you to GRAB one and read it now!), Erle Stanley Gardner (who doesn't love Perry Mason?), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (naturally!), Louis L'Amour, Oliver Strange's Sudden books, Max Brand... the list is huge. I even sometimes re-visit books of my childhood, like Enid Blyton's Famous Five, Richmal Crompton's William series, Tintins, Asterix, and even Archie comics :-)
The only category of books that I don't like is the romance-ridden ones like Mills & Boon, which seem to be a growing cancer on the shelves of my local (private) lending library.
  • Writing, editing, mail... yes, in my spare time too, but not as much as I could - one should ideally spend free time doing anything but what earns one's living, right? Still, once in a while I contribute an article to Linux For You (an Indian magazine focused on Linux) or pushing content around on the Openmoko wiki, or contributing to the ILUG-Goa mailing list (sometimes more noise than useful content, but hey - this is a friendly list, and sometimes we just chatter). I'm also on a few other mailing lists like WORD-PC, TECHWR-L, HATT, and TWIN.
  • Music... an amateur guitarist (rhythm, I play by ear) and I bought a low-cost Yamaha keyboard to see if I could deal with it. Haven't really made a concerted effort (pun intended!) yet, but looks like I could make some music with it. I still haven't learnt to read music yet, though, despite a few tries with the basics; playing a new song off sheet music still ranks among my aspirations, not among my accomplishments.
  • Photography - I do use my point-and-shoot once in a while. You can take a look at some of my favorite snaps in my Orkut photo album (needs you to be signed in with a Google Account).
  • Just driving - sometimes, getting on my bike and just riding around, finding roads I've never been on before, and discovering where they lead, is a tiny adventure. When I remember to carry my camera with me, I sometimes get a couple of nice photos too!
  • Programming - yes, I do that for leisure/fun as well. Weird, huh? I'm slowly beginning to contribute little bits and pieces to the huge mass of code out there under Open-Source licenses... I've taken so much for free from the FOSS community, I need to give back to the community too!
  • Games (arcade) - I just got hold of a GP2X F-200 recently, though I don't have an AC adaptor for the device, so am leery of updating the firmware on just the batteries, since that risks bricking the device. Still, there are quite a few apps and games out there for the device (more for its earlier versions) so I look forward to trying out quite a few of them.
  • Playing with my Openmoko Neo FreeRunner - trying out new distributions on it, exploring ideas... I would like to develop some software for the phone, but haven't gotten around to that as yet. The software platform itself isn't stable as yet, so it's not exactly a piece of cake to develop for :-)
