The National Network for Directors of Doctorate in Education programmes was set up in 1998. Among the founding Chairs of this group were David Scott and Ingrid Lunt, both of whom have made a major contribution to the understanding of professional doctorates. The Network provides a support mechanism for Directors of professional education doctorates and creates a forum for discussion of topical issues for all those leading postgraduate research degrees.

It was through the work of some of those involved in the National Network, alongside those represented on committees at the ESRC that the professional doctorate became recognised as a research degree. The main aim of the Network continues to be one of supporting those who lead professional Doctorate in Education programmes.
