THE GOLDEN RULE - ATFQ
Answer The Question

THE SILVER RULE
Make lots of points, don't just write lots of description about one point

What to include in a strong essay?
  • Make plenty of points to cover all aspects of the question.
  • Evidence your points with data.
  • Explain your points.
  • Always focus on actual places.
  • Be a critical thinker and have a balanced argument. Argument / Counter Argument.
  • Make sure you have evaluation of your argument.
  • Finish with a conclusion summarising what you have said and referring back to the question.

To hit the high grades on the IB markbands you must;
  • Make sure you understand the question and the command word. e.g. evaluate, examine, discuss.
  • Start by defining the key concept in the question. e.g. environmental sustainability.
  • First paragraph should make direct reference to the question and introduce your argument.
  • Structure your essay to allow coherent argument.
  • Use correct terminology and use maps and diagrams when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding and use well chosen case studies.
  • Cover all aspects of the question with a well developed answer . (analysis)
  • Include balanced evaluation based on evidence and your analysis. (synthesis)
  • Finish with a Conclusion summarising your claims based on your analysis.
DO NOT leave the evaluation and synthesis until the last few sentences in your conclusion. You should be evaluating your analysis and referring back to the question throughout your essay. This is what will get you towards a Level 7.
